GPT-5 vs Claude Sonnet 5

OpenAI's earlier frontier model, still capable across coding, reasoning, and agentic work. GPT-5 costs substantially less than OpenAI's newest models and handles a large context window. The catch is age: its knowledge is dated, and OpenAI now labels it a previous-generation model. Worth picking when the task is general, the budget matters, and recency does not.

The all-rounder in the Claude family, and a sensible default for most work. Sonnet 5 codes, writes, and analyses across the same ground as the flagship, reads images and documents, and holds the same very large context. It is faster and costs less. It gives up ground only on problems difficult enough to need the flagship.
